- ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Here is the English Language Proficiency requirement to attend Maastricht (as of August 24th, 2009 - please note that this can change at any time without our knowledge): Students should have a good command of the English language (written as well as spoken). If the goal of the student is to improve his or her English here, this is not the correct University to send them to. Please note that at the start of each semester we ask and receive feedback from our tutors and course coordinators concerning the level of English of each student. We will send those students we get complaints about to the Language Centre to get tested. If they do not pass the test the student will immediately be taken out of the courses he/she is doing at that time, and will be told to take an extra English language course at his/her own expense.
Before the next block starts the student will again be tested by the Language Centre. If the level of English has not improved the student will not be allowed to take part in any further courses. It is then up to the student to go home or to remain in Maastricht. Note, however, that if the student has a contract with the Guesthouse and wants to leave earlier he/she will have to pay for the remainder of that month plus an additional month cancellation fee. If we do NOT get any complaints then the student does NOT have to take the test.
Although we do not require a TOEFL test it may, in some cases, be wise to tell students to take a test anyway. A score of 220 for the computer based test, 560 for the paper based test and 83 for the internet based test, which will very soon replace the paper based test, would be sufficient to avoid being denied access to our courses.
San Diego State University (USA)
- NTU may only send a very limited number of Business Students and a lower number of SCI students. INSTEP recommends that students from other schools apply as we need to send some students from each College. CoE, HSS, and CoS students are encouraged to apply.
- Here is the English Language Proficiency requirement to attend SDSU (as of February 10th, 2009 - please note that this can change at any time without our knowledge):
Singaporean nationals - are EXEMPT from having to take either the TOEFL, IELTS OR having to submit a letter petitioning a waiver of these tests.
Students who are NOT Singapore nationals are subject to the following policy: Only two tests of English language proficiency are accepted for admission at San Diego State University: the TOEFL and the IELTS. Following is the policy for exchange students:
SDSU requires that all exchange applicants demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in English. All applicants who have not attended secondary or post-secondary educational institutions where English is the language of instruction for AT LEAST 3 YEARS of full-time study (not counting ESL) must submit a paper-based TOEFL score of 550 or higher (213 computer), or a score of 80 or higher on an IBT (internet based test) TOEFL, or an ACADEMIC version IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.
If you can verify that you have attended a secondary or post-secondary educational institution where English is the language of instruction for AT LEAST 3 YEARS of full-time study (not counting ESL), you may qualify for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver. If this is the case, please write a letter addressed to the Admissions Appeal Committee requesting that the TOEFL/IELTS be waived, state the justification for the waiver, and name the institution(s) you attended that fulfill(s) the 3-year, fulltime instruction in English requirement. Please provide verification of your enrollment at this institution. These documents should accompany the rest of your application materials.
Please be advised that the committee may, or may not grant your waiver. Clearly, taking the TOEFL or IELTS is the best way to to assure compliance with the English proficiency requirement.
